Time
Travel Troika at Annie Bloom's Books
Authors Joy Preble, Emily
Whitman, and I entertained a packed
house (actually the people in the packed store) with
our flights of literary fancy in traveling through
time and space. Rosanne Parry will moderated the
panel. There was laughter. There was assorted candy.
Even the store's cat seemed to be having fun.

event for you. Sponsored by the Oregon Council of
Teachers of English, this one-day festival at Portland
State University includes a chance to meet and work with
local authors. Special guests include Laini Taylor, Bart
King, and David Ward. Workshops emphasize little talking
from leaders (like me!) and lots of time for honing your
craft. Click here for details. |

March 18, 2012:
Heirlooms and Hineni
Fiber artist Diane Fredgant and I invite you to a parent/teen program at the Oregon Jewish Museum, in which we will explore the transformative aspects of the tallit/prayer shawl. Three young women and I will read from Blue Thread, my young adult novel in which an ancient heirloom prayer shawl intertwines with the woman suffrage campaign in 1912 Portland. Diane Fredgant will facilitate an art project, helping attendees to create their own paper designs that could be used in the creation of a tallit/prayer shawl. Art materials will be provided. ![]() ![]() Oregon Jewish Museum 1953 NW Kearney Street Portland, OR |
| March 9, 2012: Down
the Rabbit Hole Time Travel for Young Writers and Book Enthusiasts Once, thanks to
Lewis Carroll's imagination, a girl named
Alice tumbled down a
rabbit hole into Wonderland. Have you
created a fictional wonderland (or unwonderful-land)
of your own? Join author Michelle McCann and me for a
workshop on how to build real and fictional worlds,
and how to travel between them. At Book Fan Friday you can bring your own work-in-progress for review. For readers and writers age 8 to 81. It's free! 4:30 - 5:30 pm Powell's Books at Cedar Hills Crossing 3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd. Beaverton, OR |
March 1, 2012: Meet and Greet (First Thursday in Portland) Join me with other Portland

Month. We’ll be featured at Albina Community Bank’s
First Thursday event, which runs from 6 pm to 9 pm at

have a chance to meet and greet me, of course, plus
authors Carmen Bernier-Grand, Pamela Smith Hill, Barbara Kerley,
Michelle McCann, and Elizabeth Rusch. Artists Addie
Boswell and Sine Morse will display vibrant oil
paintings and paper designs inspired by children and by
Portland. Their work, as well as Blue Thread, will be available
for sale for the month of March. |
February 26, 2012: Petticoat Postcards! Sponsored
by Century of Action, celebrating 100 years of Oregon
women's right to vote.
A century ago,
suffragist Abigail Scott Duniway pasted the scandalous
"petticoat card" in her scrapbook, a card that
encouraged men to vote against suffrage for women in
1906. Join me for a look at that card and the Votes for Women!
exhibit. You'll have a chance to design postcards to
send to our government officials about what you'd like
to change in your city, state, or nation. I'll read
from and sign Blue
Thread, too. And I'll be in 1912 costume,
with an outrageous hat.Presentations at 2:00 and 2:45 pm Collins Gallery, 3rd Floor, Central Library 801 SW 10th Ave., Portland, OR |
| May 21, 2011:
Editing Workshop at Write to Publish Conference
Ooligan Press,
Portland, Oregon
This workshop will take you through a panel discussion between authors and editors to discuss both good and bad experiences in editing manuscripts, explaining why the edits went well or not, with the hope that future writers gain an understanding of what to expect during the editing process and how to get the most out of the experience. |
